Thank you Pumper Sue for pasting the above link I have been in need of some good techniques for basel testing and here it is. 🙂

8am till 6pm and 2pm till 11pm with no food?? 😱

I'm going to be grumpy on those days...:(
 
Hang on there! You only test 6 hours at a time.

So .... get up at 7 and eat brekkie that day. 11 am start testing. Eat some s-f jelly around lunchtime and have a nice cuppa. You don't have to not have tea and coffee - of course you can if you really want to make a martyr of yourself, personally I don't. Also if you generally eat enough carb and don't usually convert protein to BG, you can probably get away with just having some protein as a snackette - so eg a ham omelette. Not like half a dozen eggs and a pound of ham, just enough to keep the grubs from biting if you feel starving.

At 5pm or just after you can have your dinner!

You can just wangle it to suit your life by eating a meal early or late , because you don't do all 4 time blocks on consecutive days.
 
I'm not on a pump but tried it this morning, and I was so hungry I had a boiled egg and a bit of cheese... thinking protein and no carbs but it was at 8 from 7am to 11am and then shot up to 12.7 at 12.30 and 14.8 at 1pm so maybe the egg wasn't a good idea... I'm going to void that attempt and try again tomorrow. Or it worked and my lantus is running out after 12 hours!

That would seem to be unusually short for Lantus from what I've seen. Might it just suggest the dose is slightly too low at that time of day?

I honestly don't know any more Mike :confused:

It was 14.8 before lunch and I did usual dose + 3 correction units (1 more unit than I'd normally do) and 1.5 hrs later it's still 14.7!!!!!! Something is wrong and I'm scared I'm going to have a nervous breakdown at this rate if nobody helps me work it out soon :(

Generally rising BGs and non-responsive corrections could be several things, but my first thought is usually 'not enough basal'. Could be dodgy/overheated (rapid) cartridge though, so watch for that. Fridge OK?

It can take 1.5hrs for a correction to kick in for me sometimes too (almost always at least an hour), so try not to rage-bolus it into submission or you might pay with a low later - just about the most frustrating thing in a dodgy D day!
 
I'm trying this started at 2pm as I'm really keen to get my BM under control so the next few days I may be very hungry may also help with the weight loss lol. Will let you all know how it goes 🙂 and reading the article you can only have water or drinks with no calories or caffeine

I think sugar-free jelly is usually OK if things get bad! Good luck, let us know how it goes 🙂
 
This is a little unrelated to the comments above, but links to the original article! Gary Scheiner is my hero... His book, Think Like a Pancreas, is amazing. Also, because I live in Korea, and I need all the help I can get, I currently see a diabetes educator who works for him at Integrated Diabetes Services in Philadephia by Skype. They have been absolute lifesavers!!!

I tend to do the Basal rate test close to my annual review with the consultant.

Last time I started this a month ahead of time. I just kept clocking off another slot of time bit by bit, but life quite often changed plans ( and why not), so it took quite a long time to cover the full 24 hours. The night time is easy to do.

I certainly found the pad of sheets that Accuchek provide for these tests really useful as there were reminders about what to do before (especially what the bit about high GI food etc at the meal before) and when to abandon. Their chart was also useful for me to check that I had covered all the time slots.( if you are with Accu-Chek just phone up and ask for the basal rate testing sheets)

You only check your basal once a year? You are lucky you have such stable basals to be able to do that.

This is really depressing. I did not realise that you have to readjust the basal rate several times a year. How often do you do it, Pumper_Sue?
